Summer break: Is it essential for preparing students for the future?

As school comes around once again, students have the opportunity to get involved in different activities that will allow them to express themselves in new ways.

Finding new outlets that speak to each student’s personality  is really important for students because it teaches them life lessons and prepares them for their future whether that is college or the workforce.

School is not the only way students can mature and grow in themselves; however, the summer can actually help with future plans as well.

The summer provides students with more time for themselves and the chance to get involved in a job or other activity that the busy school year may not allow time for.

One student that has benefited from all their ventures during the summer is senior Maggie Wheeler.

Wheeler has stayed busy through the summer working as the Marlow Food Market manager and also being a leader at band camp.

“Over the summer I worked at the local food market and also spent time with my family and friends,” stated Wheeler. “I feel that working a job and having good support from my family has helped me to become a better leader in band and other extracurricular activities that I am involved in at school.”

Another student that has also benefited from working a summer job is junior Kaleb Miller.

Miller has been working at Sonic for almost a year now and has had the chance to help out his fellow co-workers.

“I love working a job because I have been able to become more mature and responsible, allowing me to become a better leader at school,” expressed Miller. “I feel that the summer is very important because not only is it a break for students but it also allows you to have more time to spend with family and friends.”

Summer is very important because it allows older students to become more responsible while helping younger ones mature and become more involved.

One student that feels that summer has helped them to have a break and have more time for some new interests they would like to pursue is freshman Ryan Harris.

“Summer is wonderful to me because it allows me to have a break from school, and I am able to spend more time with my friends,” exclaimed Harris. “I feel that the summer helps to refresh and give me a break for the next school year.”

While schools remain an obvious place of learning, summer, and the opportunities it brings, will also continue to be a time where students can pursue their interests and be exposed to new places and opportunities they may not have the chance to experience any other time of the year.  Summer is a continuation of the learning process and preparation for one’s future.
