Marlow athletics make a point to foster sport safety

With sports seasons almost always in play, sports injuries have become common in both professional leagues and high school leagues.

According to Weinstein Legal, 90% of student athletes have had some type of sports injury in their time playing, 62% of these injuries occurring during practice and half of these injuries being easily preventable.

Safety player for the Buffalo Bills Damar Hamlin has brought this situation to light, suffering from cardiac arrest during a game on Monday, Jan. 2

Hamlin faced this injury after he collapsed mid game, his heart briefly stopping after a tackle.

He is currently in recovery after returning to campus two weeks later.  However, news of his injury continues to spread, and it is causing athletic safety precautions to be questioned.

Marlow has kept up with safety precautions, with coaches taking care of student’s health.

One student that has noticed precautions taken for student safety is senior and runner for both the track and cross country teams Jordan Brown.

“We make sure to stretch to not hurt muscles or pull anything,” Brown said. “We also run together to make sure no one gets hurt, wear reflective vests in the morning to make sure cars can see us and are provided water so we stay hydrated.”

Despite precautions being taken, a chance of injury is always present, the most common injuries being sprains, strains, bruises and concussions.

Sophomore Mikey Weston has been a runner on both the track and cross country teams since he was in seventh grade, suffering from a broken wrist in eighth grade and having learned to take more care since.

“I make sure that when running, I kind of watch where I am stepping,” Weston explained. “I make sure to watch for holes and do agility and stretching beforehand.”

St. Luke’s Health found that out of school athletics football causes the most sports injuries for students still in school; with an estimated injury amount of over 450,000.

Sports injuries will continue to be present, but with the help of safety precautions, they will likely be decreased and avoided.
