There are many reasons people join band, but for senior Cierra Kirkland it is all about family and community.

While joining the Marlow High School band has been a way for Kirkland to positively impact her community, her inspiration for joining the band also comes from her mother.

“The person that inspired me the most, especially in my music, is my mother,” Kirkland said. “She has put in hard work to keep me in the band and pay for all of the expenses that go along with the band.  Without her I would never have been in the band for as long as I have.”

After being in a band for years, Kirkland has gained many life lessons.

“The things I have learned by being in band is that making mistakes is not a bad thing,” Kirkland stated. “Mistakes are lessons to learn, and by making mistakes, you can better yourself.”

The many life lessons learned through band has helped Kirkland to positively impact her fellow band members.

One person who has seen the positive impact that Kirkland has had in the band room is Marlow Band director Mathew Pitts.

“Cierra is the Trombone section leader and has many times taken it upon herself to be the leader that everyone needs at that time,” Pitts exclaimed.

Another person who has had the opportunity to experience Kirkland’s positive attitude and leadership is Caleigh Kirkland, sister of Cierra.

“Cierra is a very honest and intelligent person,” stated Caleigh.

While growing up with Kirkland, her sister has seen her personality evolve.

“She has turned into a beautiful young lady who knows what she wants and how she’s going to get it,” said Caleigh.

Cierra plans on taking her honest personality to Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, and majoring in radiology.
