Stepping into the limelight, the Marlow Outlaw Speech Team (MOST) participated in their first event of the 2022-23 season.

The event, known as Demonstration Day (Demo Day), is meant to teach students that are new to speech and debate about the ten different types of speech events and how to perform them.

It also explains the rules for the speaking or acting event before the performers take the stage.

Cameron University held Demo Day in the McMahon auditorium, with the first performance occuring at 9:15 A.M. and the last at 11:40 A.M., holding a twenty minute long intermission upon the completion of the first six performances.

The 2022 Demo Day theme was “Show Business” and featured a variety of performances related to the theme, ranging from characters based on classic movies to characters from more modern media.

Marlow has been attending the event for thirty-five years, and drama coach and the host for the last thirty three years Paula Mcconnell was in charge of organizing the event and also choosing both the show’s theme and location.

“I think my favorite part of Demo Day is that our team adds zest to the whole day with characters in costume,” Mcconnell said. “We generally theme it in accordance to what our show was the previous year, so we can utilize the costumes that we already have.”

Students were only eligible to perform their pieces if they qualified for State, and the highest placing participant of each event was chosen.

Senior Mckenna Travis performed both a Poetry and a Dramatic duet, with junior Joshua Parsons being Travis’ duet partner.

“It was an extremely daunting thing to have two pieces and have to memorize them both, but I am glad I did it,” Travis said.

Sophomore Mikey Weston also performed his Humorous Interp at the event, having placed sixth at State his freshman year.

“I wanted to be in demo day because when I watched advanced drama do it last year, it just looked like a lot of fun,” Weston stated. “My favorite part was dressing up as the teenage mutant ninja turtles.”

MOST will continue achieving excellence as they move on with their performing season.
