Leadership motivates senior to continue talents
For some, leadership can be a hard concept to grasp but to senior Kallie Slate leadership is her second nature.
Slate first became involved with Student Council after her grandmother, Becky Lightner, forced her to join in sixth grade.
“I originally did not want to join student council but after the first two months I really warmed up to the concept of the organization,” Slate said.
She recalled a memory from sixth grade when the middle school council assisted the high school project council with a Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) where the two councils worked together to landscape the high school campus.
Slate said that after seeing the positive impact that RAK had, she realized that she wanted to continue her involvement in student council.
Starting from projects in her hometown, Slate has expanded her talents 1,792 miles northwest to Portland, Oregon.
Junior Jaret Perkins recollected on their summer trip to Oregon for the Student Council National convention.
“Kallie and I have been friends for around three years now,” Perkins said. “This summer, I watched her grow as a leader and become more confident with herself.”
Slate reminisced on memories from National convention saying that it taught her to be open and put herself out there and not be afraid to make new friends.
Though at first hesitant about the organization, Slate now holds the position of Student Council President and plans to broaden her leadership ability by being involved in student leadership while attending college.
“Kallie has been an important member of our council the past four years,” Student Council advisor Ann Field said. “I am excited to see what this year holds as she brings her talents as Student Council President.”
Slate plans to attend either the University of Oklahoma in Norman or the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond and acquire a doctorate degree in medicine.
By extending her talents, she plans to make a positive difference wherever she decides to attend.
