The monthly contest is sponsored by the Oklahoma Scholastic Media (OSM) at the University of Oklahoma in Norman.

The staff sent in six different articles for the month of December.

Senior Jasmine Perez and sophomore Landry Cooper both stood out from the rest with superior ratings.

Perez sent in a personality profile, while Cooper sent in a front page design.

Cooper says he was a little surprised by his results.

“This year is my first year to do the designing without an upperclassman to help, so I’m pretty surprised to get superior ratings,” Landry said.

Journalism adviser, Sharon Bullard, says that she is impressed with the results, also because the judges have been tough this year.

“The fact that one entry was for writing and the other entry was for design indicates that the staff is doing a good job overall,” Bullard said.

Sophomore Destiny Nowlin also stood out by receiving an excellent rating on her news story, and is happy for this new experience.

“This story was a learning experience because I usually don’t write news stories about organizations like I did in this story rather than feature stories,” Nowlin said.

Nowlin also commented how difficult this year’s judges are compared to last year.

“I am surprised by the results because the critiques have been so hard this year,” Nowlin said.

The articles can receive four different ratings; ranging from worst to best there are merit, distinguished merit, excellent, and superior.

Entries that are sent in must receive a rating of distinguished merit or higher to qualify for state in April.
