Senior George Edward Coffman, III, better known as Trey, is a multisport athlete who has received numerous honors for his athletic ability over the years.

Perhaps his most prestigious honor would be being named a finalist for the “Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.”

Coffman was one of the top 10 finalists in Oklahoma and the only student from Marlow High School that has received this honor.

This scholarship is for high school students who have maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average, have participated in one of the 27 eligible school-sponsored sports, and have shown leadership in their school and in the community as well as served as a role model for underclassman.

“As a senior, Trey is the type of leader that you go to battle with because of his consistency and willingness to work,” Jeff Brewer said. “He lets his actions speak louder than his words.”

Coffman was recognized as the “2011 Baseball Newcomer of the Year” as well as “All-Tournament Team” in both 2012 and 2013.

Coffman has also been honored for his performance on the football field.

He was selected to the Duncan Banner All Area Football First Team and District 3A-1 running back of the year.

Coffman is a well-rounded athlete that gives it all and leaves it all on the field, according to head football coach Rob Renshaw.

“Trey plays the game the way it is supposed to be played,” Rob Renshaw said. “He is an excellent leader and role model for our team.”

Trey is also a three-year member of the basketball team and was named to the “all Tournament Team” in 2012.

Coffman is the son of George and Valerie Coffman and has future plans that include continuing his love for sports into his college career with hopes to play football or baseball.

Scarbrough is fitness fanatic

DSC_0786Most people start off their new year getting fit, while one senior makes it a year-round routine.

Seth Scarbrough keeps up with his workout regimen throughout the summer by running and lifting in the high school weight room.

Seth has a workout partner, junior Nick Yates, who also makes fitness a priority.

Yates said both he and Scarbrough know the importance of working hard to be in the best physical condition possible.

“In the summer we worked out two hours a day, six days a week in the weight room, and on Sundays we ran. Wrestling requires cardio training because talent can only take you so far. We knew we needed to be bigger, stronger and faster in the end.” -Junior Nick Yates

Wrestling has been is a big part of Scarbrough’s life since the age of six, and he has had many accomplishments in his wrestling career. He is a two-time state qualifier and went to state in 2012 as a sophomore and received fourth place.

He also qualified for state as a junior. Although he did not place, he has not given up and maintains a strong work ethic. Seth is going for the state title in wrestling this year at 160 pounds.

Scarbrough’s future plans are to go to University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond to wrestle and pursue a degree in kinesiology.

“I am interested in that field because I want to stay healthy while helping others,” Scarbrough said.

He said he chose UCO because he likes the school and because he is also inspired by his coaches, head coach Kelly Henderson and assistant coach Keith Kizzar, who both wrestled at UCO.

Scarbrough said Henderson has motivated him by inspiring him to become all he can be.

“He has pushed me to become more muscular,” Scarbrough said.

Henderson has also motivated him to keep up his routine throughout the year and to further his career, according to Scarbrough.

The son of Teresa and Scooter Scarbrough, Seth represented MHS last week as the Lions Club Student of the Week.
