Tyler Carney, Marlow High School’s student of the week, is anything but an average teenager. Carney does not own a cell phone nor does he have his driver’s license, and that is the way he likes it.

Carney spends his time after school in an unusual way as well. Tyler has logged 5,729 hours on the Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) Runescape.

“I have calculated that I have spent 20% of the last three years of my life playing Runescape,” Carney said.

Tyler spends most of his time in the game collecting cabbage seeds, and Carney has more cabbage seeds than anyone else in the game.

He has reached level 2,513 out of a possible 2,595. He shows amazing dedication to the game and has joined a clan to meet other players.

“I have made a lot of friends since I started playing, and I have met even more people since I joined my clan,” Carney said.

One of these friends has known Tyler from the start of his career. Preston Ewing, who lives in Canton, Ohio, who identifies as Max Grind online, said he was glad he met Carney.

“I have known Tyler from the very beginning. He is very dedicated to our clan. He is always ready to help out the ones who are not nearly as experienced. He is a really great friend who is always there,” Ewing said.

Tyler is 15th in command within his clan, Phoenix Rising. Carney has also joined a clan of sorts in real life as a first year member on the MHS exPRESS staff.

“I help with the layout and any technical difficulties that come up,” Carney said.

Tyler’s time he has spent on computers has been invaluable to the journalism staff. Getting Carney on board was no easy task, but according to journalism adviser Sharon Bullard, it was worth it.

“I practically had to force him to join our staff, but I am sure glad I won the battle,” Bullard said.

Tyler plans to continue playing Runescape long into the future. He plans to split his time after high school adding to his cabbage seed collection and pursuing a career in aeronautical engineering.

Tyler is the son of James and Rhonda Carney.
