Greer dishes out his best
Bringing his best plate to the table, sophomore Gatlin Greer received the second place award at the recent Oklahoma Meat Cooking Competition.
The competition, hosted by the Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) organization, occurred at the Oklahoma State Fair and had a set of guidelines for students involved.
These rules consisted of a maximum cost of $2 per serving, made from a cut of Sirloin and prepared in an hour or less.
Greer chose to prepare Ground Sirloin Sliders for the competition, a dish that he had made almost exclusively while practicing in class.
“The sliders are a fast, easy dish that I know I can make good,” Greer explained. “I got the idea when I saw my mom cooking hamburgers, and I replicated her recipe.”
Greer has practiced cooking as a hobby for two years and has received encouragement from both in and out of the school.
One way that he has been given support inside the school is from FCCLA advisor Tamra May, who has seen Greer’s cooking abilities and finds them very impressive.
“Gatlin is able to view a situation and do whatever it takes to get his goal,” May said.
“He knew his dish inside and out, and he did great on all of his safety and sanitation procedures.”
Though he does not plan to participate in more competitions this year, Greer will continue his passion for cooking as he grows in experience.
