Vocal sings their way into National competition

The MHS vocal choir went to Florida during spring break for the OAKE national honor choir conference.

The conference lasted four days from March 15th to March 18th.

In order to attend the conference they had to send videos of themselves singing a preselected song and a packet of music.

At the conference both the boys and girls competed separately.

Senior Marianne Anderson has been in the MHS vocal choir for the past four years, and she plans to continue participating in vocal at Cameron University.

“Attending the conference helped me learn how to blend better with other people while singing,” mentioned Anderson.

Junior Hannah Mcinvale has been in the MHS vocal choir for three years.

“My favorite thing about the trip was getting closer to vocal people, and getting to see the cool things in Florida,” explained Mcinvale. “The conference helped me grow as a musician because we had a really great teacher.”

Another student that has been a part of the MHS vocal is sophomore Erick Busch.

“My favorite part of the conference was getting to sing great songs and meeting new people that have similar interests,” stated Busch. “Attending the conference helped me with my higher vocal range, and because I am a baritone, it is harder for me to reach those higher notes.”

It is freshman Alexie Linden’s first year on the MHS vocal team, but she participated in vocal throughout middle school as well.

“My favorite part of the trip was getting to meet all the new people at the conference and make new friends,” expressed Linden. “Participating in the conference helped me become better at sight reading new music.”

A few other students that participated in the conference were senior Kenzie Retherford, junior Travis Phillips, sophomores Erick Busch, Katelyn Mcullum, and Katie Mcpherson.

MHS vocal is a very supportive team, and one source of their support comes from the Outlaw vocal teacher Mrs. Sarah Pitts.

Mrs. Pitts has been the vocal teacher at Marlow for the middle and high school for five years.

Mrs. Pitts pushes her students to do their best and support each other in everything they do. Vocal will continue to work hard to prepare for their next contests and spring concerts.
