Love yourself better this Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is coming up, and the most common first thought that comes to mind is relationships with other people.
However, loving others is not the only way to celebrate the annual holiday.
Self love is the new trend this season whether you have a partner or not.
According to an article from Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, self love is defined as “a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological and spiritual growth.”
Self love also means to make your own happiness a priority, take care of your own needs and do not settle for less than you deserve.
Students at Marlow High School have different ways of granting themselves the much needed self care in their lives.
Self love is a good way to brighten up a day for sophomore Emma Weston.
“I will put my phone on do-not-disturb and do some of my favorite things like watching my favorite movie, reading a book, or listening to music while doing something I’ve been putting off,” expressed Weston. “Anything to just take a step back from all the negativity in the world and focus on some of the stuff I love doing helps.”
While loving yourself is very crucial, it is also important to help others with loving themselves.
You can do so by encouraging them, giving them space, complementing them and showing love towards them.
An article from Millennials in Motion Magazine stated that loving others is equally important, as long as the others are loving you as well.
“To maintain a healthy relationship with anyone, make sure you both are pouring into each other equally. Otherwise, the relationship will become exhausting. If you pour into someone more than they pour into you, you can lose yourself and become unhappy,” the article stated.
On Friday, Jan. 13, singer and songwriter Miley Cyrus released a new song titled “Flowers,” which is the first single released for her new album “Endless Summer Vacation” that is set to come out on Mar. 10, 2023.
Since its release, fans of Cyrus, along with outsiders, have been raving over it.
The song has been record shattering for Cyrus on multiple streaming platforms including Spotify and Apple Music.
“Flowers” became the most-streamed song in a single week, as well as becoming her first number one song in over a decade.
“I think that the song ‘Flowers’ was a girl boss move,” stated Weston. “She wrote the song that every girl and boy needs to hear.”
Many people have noticed that Cyrus’s song is in close relationship to the song “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars.
Fans have been speculating this song to be about her life after her breakup with Liam Hemsworth.
Not only did he dedicate Mars’ song to Cyrus, but she also released the song on Hemsworth’s birthday, seemingly as a way of revenge.
All Hollywood theories aside, the song makes notes of ways to love yourself.
Some of these lyrics written by Cyrus include “buy myself flowers,” “hold my own hand,” “take myself dancing,” and more lines contradict the song dedicated to her by Hemsworth.
All of these are simple actions people can take to show themselves self love.
“I think it will show people how they do not need to rely on someone else to treat them right and that they can treat themselves to whatever they want instead of waiting for someone else to,” commented Weston.
This new song will urge people to treat themselves this Valentine’s Day to the most important type of love: self love.
