Vermillion’s love of music grows through senior year

Encouraging Marlow High School one program at a time, senior Renee Vermillion has used her years of involvement in the MHS band and chorus department to inspire other band and choir students.

Vermillion has been an active member of band for seven years and choir for six, as well as being a member of the Pride of Outlaw Country and the MHS Entertainers.

Building on her leadership skills, Vermillion auditioned for the highly desirable drum major position her junior year.

After acquiring the drum major position, Vermillion received duties such as conducting halftime performances at high school football games, helping with marching fundamentals and assisting Band Director Billy Daniel in the classroom.

Vermillion also took on the role of choir president and soprano section leader upon entering her senior year.

Vermillion’s roles in choir include duties such as helping teach music and assisting Marlow High School Vocal Director Sarah Pitts.

Considering what she has gathered from the programs, Vermillion defines how the programs have influenced her since joining band and choir.

“These programs have taught me a lot about leadership and responsibility, along with how to work hard and be independent,” described Vermillion.

Vermillion has grown through her years in the band, and many classmates have acknowledged her evolution as a leader.

Her friend through it all, senior Chelsea Rose shared her outlook on Vermillion’s growth through the program.

“Renee has grown tremendously through the band program,” Rose said. “She has gained so much confidence in herself through her improvement as both a flautist and drum major. This year especially I have seen her grow to be even more social and a great leader.”

Having been friends with Vermillion since fifth grade, Rose recalled how Vermillion has inspired her.

“Renee has inspired me by always being open-minded,” Rose explained. “She is a very supportive person who has shown me the importance of kindness.”

After high school, Vermillion plans to attend college and double-major in history and music, before later going into law or becoming a history professor.
