Rose writes towards a bright future
Senior and MHS exPRESS Editor-in-Chief Chelsea Rose has been a part of the journalism class for three years.
She took on the role of assistant editor her junior year, but Rose has since elevated to the head editor position.
Rose is in charge of planning articles and topics to include in the weekly publication, assigning articles to writers and reviewing and editing each story that will go in the following Thursday’s paper.
Since joining the journalism class her sophomore year, Rose has learned to be more outgoing and confident not only in the newsroom but in all aspects of her life,
“The organization has boosted my confidence in unbelievable ways, which has definitely translated into my academics too,” Rose expressed.
Every weekend Rose devotes multiple hours of her time to edit and revise the stories that staff writers turn in on Saturdays.
After many rounds of reviewing and proofreading articles, Rose or other staffers turn in stories to Advisor Haley Wilson.
Wilson teaches English IV at the high school while also advising the journalism class during third period where Wilson makes final edits on the articles that are planned to be published each week.
After having the advisory position for seven years, Wilson has gotten the chance to see many students, especially Rose, grow and improve in their writing abilities.
“She has continued to evolve from an inexperienced, yet very excited and motivated writer, to an experienced, dedicated and inspiring writer and mentor for all staffers,” Wilson commented.
Not only is Wilson in charge of putting final edits on papers, she enters journalism students in a contest every year held by Oklahoma Scholastic Media (OSM).
For the on-deadline portion of the contest, Rose excelled with her article in the opinion category which earned her the title of State Champion.
Many of Rose’s friends have much to be proud of, including senior Renee Vermillion who has known Rose since their time in the fifth grade.
Not only has seeing Rose grow throughout their time as friends made an impact on Vermillion’s life, but Vermillion also looks forward to watching Rose’s achievements in the future.
“I get very proud of my friends when they do something good,” Vermillion explained. “Chelsea is so smart and hardworking, so I have a lot to be proud of.”
The future is definitely bright for Rose as she aims to continue winning awards and writing and editing great stories that impact not only Marlow High School but also the community around her.
Rose plans to pursue journalism at the University of Oklahoma and later study law after receiving her Bachelor’s Degree.
