At Marlow High School students have been given the opportunity to be a part of the MHS exPRESS, the journalism program that publishes stories weekly in the Marlow Review.
Working behind the scenes of the MHS exPRESS is Head Layout Editor and senior Brianna Reed and Assistant Layout Editor and junior Caleb Baade.
Their jobs as layout editors consist of collecting all of the stories and pictures the writers have written and taken for the week and putting them into the newspaper format before sending the finished product to the Marlow Review for publishing front page design
While this takes up time and hard work, it also consists of technological skill and creativity.
Assistant Editor and junior Chelsea Strutton explained how the layout editors contribute to MHS exPRESS each week.
“Layout editors help in every aspect of our journalism class. When we plan our stories for the following week’s paper, they help us come up with ideas for a variety of stories. When we need help taking pictures for our articles, they always volunteer to help out,” stated Strutton.
“Then, when it is the day we submit our paper to the Marlow Review, they format our articles to fit together perfectly, and they make sure that everyone is happy with the final results.”
Taking on their roles as layout editors, Reed and Baade explained their favorite parts of being layout editors in the MHS exPRESS.
“I love being in the class. It has been my favorite class ever since I was a freshman,” stated Reed. “Now that I am a senior layout editor, I have more authority in the class. Whenever you join journalism it is like having a family inside of school.”
Similarly Baade expresses his favorite part of being a layout editor.
“My favorite part of being a layout editor is getting to see the paper every Thursday and knowing that I helped create it and that the stress from Tuesday was worth it,” Baade stated.
MHS exPRESS advisor Haley Wilson explained why being a part of the journalism organization is beneficial to Reed’s and Baade’s futures.
“When students are part of a newspaper publication, no matter what career they choose to pursue, they will benefit from the written and virtual communicative skills that are developed in journalism. Being able to use the technology and their creativity is going to impact students far beyond their career as a staff member of the MHS exPRESS. Brianna and Caleb have gained hands on experience in maintaining a job with tight deadlines and developing their ability to lead under pressure,” Wilson explained.
As the year continues, Reed and Baade will continue working hard to put the paper together each week and ensure its organization.
