STEM builds up their futures

From building on students’ leadership abilities to stimulating their brains, Marlow High School provides various clubs and organizations that will help students “Build Better Futures.”

One such group is the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics club, or the better known as the STEM club.

The STEM club meets every other Monday of each month where they build projects out of everyday household items.

STEM club, previously known as the Math club, focuses on learning these sciences with an integrated and hands-on approach.

Recently, on Wednesday, Feb. 19, four members of the STEM club competed at the annual engineering fair hosted in Oklahoma City at the Oklahoma Science Museum.

The Engineering Fair is an annual event where middle and high school students can grow in their STEM education.

Here, three members entered the electric motor construction category while the fourth member entered the ping-pong launcher category.

As president of the MHS STEM club, senior Aubrey Hewitt described how the fair was a valuable learning experience for her.

“I got to see how many ways there were to build one thing,” said Hewitt. “Within the club, we had three different designs. There were many more at the fair that people built.”

Hewitt also mentioned what being in STEM means to her and what it has taught her for her future career.

“I’ve always loved science and math and being with a group of people with the same passion energizes me,” said Hewitt. “The club has taught me that science and engineering isn’t something that’s out of my reach, and I think it’s cool to see the practicalities of STEM in my everyday life and potential future.”

Although the club focuses on building projects, they also offer math tutoring for students 2nd grade through 10th grade every Monday and Wednesday at the Garland Smith Public Library from 3:00 p.m to 4:15 p.m.
