With the idea of producing a new Alumni Association for graduates of student council around Oklahoma, junior Elena Holguin and student council adviser Ann Field are preparing for a board meeting with the Executive Director of the Oklahoma Association of Student Councils (OASC) and StuCo adviser of Norman High, Dawn Brockman, on Jan. 28.

Winning the position of the OASC presidency in November of 2019, Holguin explained the reasoning behind the Alumni project.

“The purpose of the OASC Alumni Association is to have an association for adults to participate in after they have graduated in hopes to make a difference in their community,” said Holguin. “We hope that they would be willing to donate to provide scholarships for Basic, Advanced, and state convention, so kids that can’t afford to go to those events can learn leadership skills that are very pertinent in high school right now.”

Teaming up with the other MHS StuCo members, Holguin and the council strive to make the Alumni Association possible.

MHS StuCo Vice-President junior Jake Waller expressed why having a Marlow StuCo member represent OASC is important.

“Marlow is a smaller school, and we usually don’t have much influence on the state level,” said Waller. “Elena has been given a position to be an example to hundreds of people, and I think she will do just that.”

Directing Holguin through the Alumni process, StuCo advisor Ann Field described Holguin’s leadership qualities for the OASC  president position.

“Elena has the perfect combination of a huge heart for people, outstanding organizational skills, a down-to-earth personality and motivation to make our council and the councils across our state successful,” said Field. “Elena will represent her hometown well. I know she will be professional and friendly, and she will make us proud.”

With hopes of a successful turnout for the OASC Alumni Association, Holguin plans to take action in the group after graduation and encourage other graduates to take part as well.
