For the past three and a half years, senior James Johnston has participated in the Entertainers program at Marlow High School.

The experience gained from this singing program has brought many opportunities to Johnston, who now holds the titles of the baritone section leader and the choir secretary.

Fellow baritone senior Hunter Hedrick explained the process in which Johnston takes part in as section leader.

“As the section leader, James takes attendance and makes sure that we all have our music,” said Hedrick. “He also plays our practice tracks during rehearsal so that we can work on our music.”

When Johnston first joined the Entertainers, he was described as quiet and shy but throughout his time in this musical program, senior Skylar Schnedorf has noticed his changes and expressed how she feels about his personal growth.

“He has always been skilled and talented in his voice, a wonderful singer and a team player, but I have seen his leadership and confidence grow the most,” said Schnedorf. “I am more proud of his growth in personal development than talent-wise, as he has always been super talented.”

Johnston is now known to be a positive and outgoing person that helps lift and build confidence in the younger members involved with Entertainers.

Sarah Pitts, Entertainers director, has recognized the success of Johnston throughout his time associated with this organization.

“James has been a member of two ensembles that have received “I” ratings at the state choral contest,” said Pitts. “He not only helped the Entertainers do well at state contest but also helped achieve our goal of having official choir officers.”

With plans to attend the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) after graduation, Johnston intends to use the skills learned through his involvement with Entertainers in college.

“The skills that I believe will help me the most are communication and the ability to be more open,” said Johnston. “I will be able to communicate with people better and not be as nervous.”

While attending UCO, Johnston plans to earn his musical theatre degree with his positive and determined attitude to help him along the way.
