With the school year sailing by, senior Mariah Howard has big plans for her future outside of Marlow High School.
Howard’s plan of action includes joining the Navy, a career that requires determination, strength and will power – all characteristics that Howard possesses.
Beginning in June with a seven week boot camp located in Chicago, Illinois, Howard will learn the importance of teamwork, patience and conflict resolution.
When asked which of her traits will be helpful in joining the military, Howard expressed multiple attributes that will lead her to success within the strict profession.
“I’m very hard working, and when I have my mind set on something, I go after it,” said Howard. “No matter what gets in my way, I’m an overcomer.”
Howard remarked that her work ethic will assist her throughout her years in the Navy where shifts can range up to 12+ hours.
Prideful of Howard’s achievements and aspirations, Howard’s close friends appear supportive of her choice to enter the military.
Senior and friend Aurelia Holguin conveyed her enthusiasm towards Howard’s future and the skills that Howard retains.
“I’m very proud of Mariah and respect her decision,” said Holguin. “She is very determined and athletic, which is much needed for anyone going into a branch of the military.”
Howard’s friends are not the only individuals exuberant to see where her life takes her.
Petty Officer Damian Blackwell, Howard’s recruiter, described how Howard stands out amongst the crowd.
“I look for motivated and driven people who want to better their lives,” said Blackwell. “I saw a willingness in her to be something bigger than herself.”
Howard plans on entering the dental or medical route of being a Hospital Corpsman where she can further her love for helping people in need.
As her senior year cruises by, Howard will continue to navigate towards her bright future.
