As students progress through their education, they reach an age where they begin to desire greater responsibility by seeking out employment.
The town of Marlow offers many job opportunities to students, ranging from several fast food restaurants to boutiques.
In a survey ran throughout Marlow High School, out of 203 participants, 45% were said to previously or currently have a job.
When asked of their etiquettes, Tandy Banks, owner of Giuseppe’s, listed what she finds important in a potential new worker.
“We look at character, an excitement about the opportunity to be apart of our team, the ability to communicate, and teachibility,” said Banks. “One thing we like to improve in both students and adults is their commitment to work. Attention to detail, problem solving, and caring for customers are really important to our business.”
Applying for a job is a step towards success; however, the way a student presents him or herself is a substantial part of the process.
General manager of Sonic, Brenda Champ, stated that during the interview stage, the student is evaluated on if they are well groomed and polite.
Senior Aubri Pearson, employed at West Wind Assisted Living, described the impact her job has made on her.
“I enjoy my job because it allows me to help and interact with the people around me,” said Pearson. “Through working, my time management has improved, and I now know how to work around things and determine what’s important and what’s fun.”
When asked about their student workers, West Wind’s Corporate Chef Whitney Powell said their business seeks out young workers.
“We actually do prefer high school students for our afternoon shifts,” said Powell. “We’ve always employed them in the kitchen.”
With businesses willing to take in and educate students, the job opportunities in Marlow remain open to those who apply with interest in gaining skills to further advance themselves in various industries.
