With an 8-6 victory against Central High on Monday, the Marlow High School baseball team extended their season record to 8-5.

Struggling at the beginning of the season, they have made a complete turnaround.

Assistant coach Jeffery Walker says that, although they have an inexperienced team, this season will be successful.

“We have a lot of young guys. I feel like we’ve turned a corner. We’re going to do fine,” Walker said. “The first three or four games, they all wanted to panic, but we have great leaders like Beau, Logan, Anthony, and Brady to help everyone out. They’ve really stepped up as leaders for the team.”

Manager Brooklyn Moore says that, even from the dugout, she sees the boys improving.

“I am confident in the boys and their abilities to step up and perform. I believe that they will go far this year.”

One player says that the key to this success this season will be coming together and playing as a team.

“Once we figure that out, no one will beat us. We have a lot more talent than people are giving us credit for, but I guess sometimes you need that extra motivation,” junior Kyle Seeley said.

With optimism in mind, Walker gave some insight about the upcoming season.

“The schedule is tough. We are going to play a lot of hard teams like Weatherford and Tuttle. There aren’t any games we can just blow off,” he said. “Brewer has arranged a rough schedule.”

Senior Beau Meshell talks confidently about the young team’s abilities.

“I feel good about this season. It’s a little bit of a rebuilding year,” Meshell said. “We have a bunch of young, good kids. If we play as a team, we will be in there in the end.”

Coach Walker praised Meshell for his outstanding leadership qualities.

“Beau stands out to me. He could come and live with me and I’d be fine with it. He’s very mature. I would say that he is a man,” Walker said. “He accepts responsibility. Even though he knows he’s one of the best, he doesn’t think that he’s too good to be coached or get in trouble. He’s a hard working kid. He was taught well by his parents.”

Along with others on the team, sophomore Devin Crawford says that his goal for this year is to win state.

“My personal goal is to do anything and everything to help my team win a state championship,” Crawford said.

Walker also complimented Crawford’s effort this season.

“He’s stepped up to pitching,” Walker said. “That’s a role that we didn’t plan on him taking so soon. He’s kept us in the game more than once.”

One freshman says that it is not all about competition.

“I feel great about the upcoming season. I feel like if we play together and have fun playing the game, we will be fine,” freshman Tanner Ladon said.

Marlow will be hosting it’s next game the 17 against Cache starting at 4:30.
