Phillips sings his way through senior year

Aidan Duke
Writer
Senior Travis Phillips has
been a member of the
Marlow High School Vocal
program for six years now,
beginning the activity itself

when he was in the sev-
enth grade.

Phillips has grown as a vo-
calist since he began sing-
ing, learning many life les-
sons through the program

and finding a love for it.

“The best part about Vo-
cal has been going to new

places and making friends.
It has taught me to be a
better person in many
ways,” said Phillips.
Spending the majority of

his career as a MHS Enter-
tainer, Phillips has worked

very hard to contribute to
his team.
His dedication to vocal has
impressed many people,
including Vocal Director
Sarah Pitts.
“I have known Travis since
he was in the seventh
grade and feel very lucky
enough to have Travis as

one of my students for his
entire vocal career,” Pitts
said. “Travis’ best trait

would be that he is hard-
working and dedicated to

this program. He wants
this program to succeed

and to see not just him-
self, but others succeed as

well.”

Travis has been very suc-
cessful in the vocal pro-
gram, having earned spots

in two national honor
choirs.
He has also earned spots
in the SWOK All-Region
and OKCDA All-State

Chorus, and received Su-
periors and Excellents at

District and State OSSAA

Contests.
Additionally, Phillips has
been the section leader for
the Baritone section for the
last three years.
Phillips’ success derives
from not only his work
ethic, but also his overall
kindness towards fellow
students.
One individual who has

recognized Phillip’’s kind-
ness is fellow senior Mag-
gie Wheeler.

“I have known Travis since
the seventh grade when I
joined vocal. Since then,
Travis has been a really
good friend and a brother

I never had,” said Wheel-
er. “Travis’ best trait is his

sense of humor, even in

terrible times, and a posi-
tive attitude.”

Phillips’ leadership and
kindness will continue to
grow as he continues his
journey as a vocalist.
After graduation, Phillips

will attend Cameron Uni-
versity to pursue a degree

in business and econom-
ics, while continuing to

write music.
