Senior Emma Samples has been a member of Marlow High School cheer since her freshman year.
Samples has won many awards with her team, including OSSAA State Academic Champions in 2020 and OSSAA Distinguished Academic Achievement Awards in 2021 and 2022.
Her accolades are a testament to the hardwork and dedication that she has shown to the sport, and her love for the sport also stems from the personal satisfaction it brings to her life.
“I enjoy cheering because it helps me to stay positive,” stated Samples. “I like the atmosphere of the game and the student section.”
Emma’s leadership and positive attitude she has gained from cheer has also impacted her close friends.
One person who has benefited from Sample’s energetic personality is fellow squad member and friend senior Chesnie Stuart.
“She is such a confident and outgoing person: she is not afraid to try new things. Her example has made me branch out and try new things as well. She is a big reason why I am more outgoing now,” Stuart expressed.
MHS cheer coach Amy Herschock has also watched Samples grow and change throughout her years in the organization.
“Emma was more timid and quiet as a freshman as opposed to who she has developed into as a senior,” expressed Amy Herchock. “Emma has been a great leader for our squad. She is task oriented, so whether it is a run through that needs to be completed or helping teach material, she is always willing and able to do so.”
Samples plans on taking her outgoing personality and leadership abilities to the University of Purdue, where she will pursue a degree in chemical engineering or marketing.
