Retherford spreads kindness

Senior Kenzie Retherford has played the clarinet since the sixth grade, picking up the instrument through the Marlow Middle School band program.

Retherford joined Marlow’s band due to her love for music, the class growing to be something much more special to her over time spent in class.

“I joined Marlow’s band because I have always liked music and wanted to hang out with my friends,” Retherford said.  “I have gained leadership skills and have been able to form many new relationships with people.”

The band has played at all of the football games, as well as giving students the opportunity to compete in competitions.

The experience she has gained throughout the years lead to her being awarded the 2022 Clarinet of the Year Award during her junior year.

“Band has allowed me to meet people that have given me space to grow and be myself,” Retherford expressed. “I have been given time to learn from past mistakes without fear of judgment.”

Through her time in band, Rethorford has both improved in playing and taken the time to befriend her classmates.

Retherford met junior Jesika Friedl through the Girl Scouts, their friendship sparking after Freidl entered high school.

“Kenzie is caring, loving, smart and so much more,” Friedl said. “She accepts me for who I am and does not judge me. She is always so sweet and caring and lets me be myself around her. She does not judge anyone and will always accept someone with open arms.”

Junior Maggie Wheeler befriended Retherford during band and vocal concerts in middle school: the two began growing closer during high school.

“Kenzie has affected me by being a great friend and a great role model,” Wheeler said. “She is always there if you need someone to talk to, and she will help you deal with what is going on in your life.”

Though she has yet to decide what university to attend, Retherford plans to use her kindness to pursue a degree in psychology.
