The Marlow High School cheer team went to the Game Day Regionals on Saturday Nov. 5. Unfortunately; the girls did not make it to state, placing 34th out of 43 cheer squads.
Although they were defeated, they have plenty of accomplishments in the 4A class.
For example, this year they were awarded the Game Day Team Champions at their summer cheer camp at Oklahoma University, which gave them the privilege to travel to Orlando, Florida over New Years to perform at the Citrus Bowl football game on Jan. 2nd.
Throughout their achievements, cheer coach Amy Herchock has pushed them to become even more successful.
Herchock stated, “I can honestly say that I do my best to build more of a mentoring relationship with them, and a trusting relationship, so they know that no matter how hard I push them, it’s never out of selfish ambition or gain, it’s for them to push themselves to the level of excellence that I know they can be.”
Adding to her previous statement, Herchock explains the way the team has prepared for their regional competition.
“We practice at 6 a.m., beginning in August,” Herchock exclaimed. “Some of that is game prep, and the remainder is prepping for competition season.”
Senior Katie Ellsworth expressed how cheering for MHS has brought her great memories for the past five years she has cheered.
“The best part about cheer is the relationships I have made with all the girls on the team and all the laughs we share,” stated Ellsworth.
Many great memories have been made with the MHS cheer team through the years, but nothing could compare to being this close to state for these girls.
Senior Katy Deiedrich has cheered since seventh grade and always looked up to the cheerleaders when she was younger.
Diedrich communicated how she uses her nerves to her advantage and how excited she was to have such a great opportunity.
“It is a little nerve racking, but super exciting,” Diedrich expressed.
“I really don’t calm my nerves before a performance, I just use the nerves to make me louder and jump higher.”
The girls and Herchock have gone above and beyond to accomplish where they stand today.
