Maintaining the Outlaw dynasty
Marlow High School has been very successful throughout its history and continues to thrive against competition.
One of the main activities that Marlow has dominated over the years is sports, especially during the 2021- 2022 seasons.
Marlow’s football and cross country teams both won state championships in 2021 and will get the chance to face more difficult competition this year by moving up classes.
Both teams have moved up in classes this year because of the increase in students compared to last year’s number of students.
Football moved back up to 3A this year where they have played before in previous seasons.
Head football coach, Matt Weber explains his opinion on the 3A class.
“3A is the toughest class in football, and every team in our district has a legitimate shot at making the playoffs,” stated Weber. “Week-in-week out we will be in a battle.”
One of the assistant coaches that will help Weber in the weekly battle of 3A football is Jeremy Gage.
Gage coaches the safeties and receivers and is also the defensive coordinator.
“Moving up to 3A will bring better competition, but it is something we can stand up against,” stated Gage.
The football team will attempt to defend its championship title against the steeper competition as they continue to challenge themselves everyday.
One player who routinely puts in hard work everyday for the football team is senior Avrey Payne.
Being both wide receiver and corner positions Payne explains the competition.
“I think the competition will definitely be different but nothing the team can’t handle,” stated Payne. “To win State again all we have to do is buy in and trust in our coaches.”
Marlow has a rich history of excellence in cross country as well.
Cross country moved up to 4A after winning back to back State Championships in the 3A class.
The head coach for the cross country teams is Mickey Eaves with the help of Dr. Ivory.
“We always coach each group to become the best they can be,” stated Eaves. “As a coach my goal is to make good men and women not to win championships.”
Moving up to 4A will be a new experience for the cross country teams and will allow them to push themselves to the limit, showcasing the teams’ determination.
“I am proud of how our team has focused on getting better every day and that›s all we can ask for as coaches,” stated Dr. Ivory. “We never put a limit on our teams.”
Senior Ean Hewitt has been a part of cross country for 3 years and is a one time all-stater.
“I feel that we’re going to surprise ourselves and other teams with our performance in 4A.” stated Hewitt. Both the football and cross country teams have done extraordinarily well in past seasons and will continue to push themselves this year to represent Marlow with pride.
