The Marlow High School Outlaw and Lady Outlaw golf teams traveled to Ardmore to participate in the 2022 4A State tournaments.
Both teams competed at the Lake Murray golf course for each day of its tournaments.
The girls golf tournament took place on Thursday, May 5 and Friday, May 6 with five Lady Outlaws in attendance, and the boys tournament took place on Monday, May 9 and Tuesday, May 10 with one Outlaw competing.
The golfers in attendance competed in two rounds over the course of two days- each student competing in one round per day.
The total scores of both days are totaled up at the end of the day, and the golfers are ranked from lowest score to highest.
Points are added to score for number of swings taken to reach the hole, with all of the teams individual placings adding points to the total team score.
The girls golf team won second place with a total of 736 points, earning the first girls golf State Runner-up trophy in school history.
Five members of the Lady Outlaws golf team attended the state tournament and worked to earn these points, one of these students being sophomore and nine year player of the sport, Gabby Hack.
Hack placed third in State and has a personal best score of 78.
“I am very satisfied with how I played,” Hack stated. “I feel like I went out there and really focused on doing my best and not worrying about anyone else, and I think that worked out really well for me.”
The Outlaw and Lady Outlaw golf teams have changed and grown over their twelve years of existence, allowing students to be able to grow and mature throughout the program.
One of these students is senior Miranda Martinez, who has succeeded in attending State for all four years of high school.
“I have seen myself improve as a person and as a player this season,” Martinez expressed. “I have kept my head in the game and not let outside issues that I do not have control over control me throughout playing,”
The team’s success was greatly helped by the guidance of their coach.
In the case of the Lady Outlaws, the team’s guidance has come from elementary school computer teacher Mikey Eaves, who has been in charge of the Lady Outlaws golf team for all twelve years that Marlow has had the sport.
“Our team’s goals were to win a State Championship and improve every tournament,” Eaves explained. “We finished just short of that goal by five strokes but we shot our second best score of the season at the State tournament meaning we definitely improved.”
The boys golf team has also done a great job of working toward its goals, being ranked in tenth place at state.
James Brown has coached boys golf for four years, beginning his high school coaching career in 2019.
“This year our team has gotten mentally tougher,” Brown said. “We have become better able to handle what goes wrong.”
Senior Ty Scott was the sole attendee from the boys golf team and placed ninth at State, successfully attending State for the second time.
Scott has golfed since he was young and placed ninth at state as well as a 2022 boys golf All-State award and fifth place at Regionals.
“I prepared for state by practicing my short game and not worrying as much about long irons,” Scott expressed. “I am happy with how I played because I did good enough to reach my goal of reaching state and placing.”
With their three month long season coming to a close, the Outlaw and Lady Outlaw golf teams will put away their clubs until next season.
The girls and boys had a very successful and record-breaking season and will continue with their successes in years to come.
