Drama ends semester sucessfully
Marlow’s High School drama students competed in a drama tournament in Madill, Oklahoma, on Saturday, Dec. 4.
Students had the option to perform their different pieces that involved many different forms of drama, such as a humorous or dramatic duet, a humorous or dramatic interpretation, monologue, prose, poetry, standard or original oratory, domestic extemp and foreign extemp.
The students got the chance to choose what piece they wanted to recite or act, but it had to be a previously published piece of work.
Only freshmen and sophomores participated in standard oratory and prose, and only juniors and seniors participated in poetry, but all highschool students were eligible to participate in all other categories.
Drama students competed in this tournament last year virtually, so students were excited to return to the competition in-person.
At the tournament Marlow went against multiple teams.
One of Marlow’s freshmen drama students, Emma Weston, performed a two-minute piece of a humorous character that morphed into a whole new dramatic character.
Weston’s piece for the drama tournament was called “Run Run Run as Fast as You Can.”
“This piece has been challenging to me because from my last tournaments I could look at my piece two times, but at this tournament, I had to have fully memorized,” stated Weston. “I like Drama because it builds my public speaking skills and increases my confidence.”
Another student, sophomore Joshua Parsons placed second in prose.
“I feel like for me this tournament was harder because I had a lot of competition and this was my first time doing prose, so it was different from most categosecond year doing drama. I did drama one last year, and I’ve loved it in ever sense.”
The Madill drama tournament was challenging for all the students, but the pupils were ready for its difficulties and competed well.
With the drama department’s last tournament of the semester behind them, the team will now go on to prepare for the regionals and state tournaments.
