Hammond flies towards success
Showcasing her dedication to her activities, senior Maggie Hammond is using her high school years as a stepping stone to her future career in Air Force Aviation.
Hammond aspires to be a pilot in the Air Force—a career that requires the completion of multiple training courses, at minimum a bachelor’s degree and various knowledge about aviation.
Hammond became interested in joining the Air Force after her older brother’s departure to the Marine Corps Recruit Training the summer before her senior year.
“I think I will be a great fit for the Air Force,” expressed Hammond. “I will love what I am doing, and I will have the discipline and respect that they will expect from me.”
At Marlow High, Hammond is involved in the band, where she plays trumpet; stagecraft, where she designs sets for the drama department and weightlifting, where she pushes her physical strength.
The three activities have taught Hammond the importance of working hard towards a goal and the rewards of accomplishments.
Hammond is known for her determination to succeed—a trait weightlifting coach and former National Guard member Freddie Crowson has noticed throughout her participation in the weightlifting course.
“Maggie was a little timid at the beginning of the year, but she is now much more comfortable and confident in her ability to do the workouts.” Crowson declared, “Maggie has the discipline, drive and desire to be successful which will all be important to her success as a member of the Armed Forces.”
Hammond’s growth has not only been noticed by her superiors but also the peers that surround her everyday.
Senior Renee Vermillion has been friends with Hammond since the pair were in fifth grade and has watched Hammond grow into the senior she is today.
“Maggie has gotten a lot more mature, and she tries to deal with problems head-on rather than avoiding them,” explained Vermillion. “She is a hard worker, and I think that no matter what she’ll be successful.”
With Hammond’s big plans being backed by those around her, she plans to attend Oklahoma State University to obtain her degree in Aerospace Engineering while partaking in OSU’s Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC).
