Senior Tamara McConnell plays to the beat of her senior year as she goes into her seventh year of being in the Marlow Outlaw Band.

McConnell’s musical journey began with playing the alto saxophone in the sixth grade, and her passion for making music has continued to grow ever since.

Band is not just about music for McConnell, it has also helped her develop relationships with other students and grow in new skills.

“Band has helped me form greater connections with all grades in our school, not just my grade, and I feel like that has made me grow in my communication skills,” said McConnell.

McConnell joining the band has positively affected not only herself but her fellow classmates as well.

Fellow saxophone player and friend, senior Rachel Retherford, commented on the positive influence McConnell has had on the elective since joining.

“She brings joyfulness to the band program through always having a smile on her face,” said Retherford. “Not only that but she also has amazing talent on the saxophone.”

That positive attitude and talent led to McConnell being chosen as an Outstanding Band Student by Band Director Billy Daniel and earning the responsibility of Saxophone Section Leader her freshman year and each year since.

Daniel has high praise for McConnell, calling her one of the best saxophone players he has taught in his 18 years as a band director.

He also discussed some of the reasons behind selecting her for that position and the impact she has on the band as a leader.

“Tamara definitely leads by example, works hard and is always prepared. She is always very helpful to me and those around her,” said Daniel. “She is such a strong player, and that helps some of the younger kids play with more confidence.”

As her high school career comes to an end, McConnell has plans after graduation to attend the University of Central Oklahoma and pursue a major in Biology and a minor in Chemistry.
