Marlow High School Student Council’s goal was to shoot for the stars as they held the third annual  M.O.R.O.T.O. week that benefited the local Marlow Samaritans.

After a week of hard work mixed with friendly competition and fun, MHS was able to donate $6,011 to the Marlow Samaritans.

Standing for Marlow Outlaws Reaching Out To Others, the philanthropic week is based on the dream to involve the community in a charitable fundraising event.

This year’s week-long event included activities such as a Moon Walk-A-Thon, a Galactic Game Night and the “Big Bang Assembly” at the end of the week to officially announce the amount raised.

There were many competitions for the students of MHS to participate in, including an “Empire Spikes Back” Volleyball Tournament, an art contest, a chain-link class competition and a class participation competition, which also doubles to crown a M.O.R.O.T.O King and Queen.

To kick off the beginning of M.O.R.O.T.O. week, MHS StuCo hosted a “Freshmen Launch” on Friday, Jan. 31 to inform and excite the ninth grade students about the philanthropic week.

The next morning, students were sponsored to walk a designated number of laps around the Marlow Middle School Track at the Moon Walk-A-Thon.

Despite the junior class claiming the win at the walk-a-thon due to having the most attendees, freshman Landon Holley was named Moon Walk-A-Thon MVP after walking thirty laps, a number that exceeds the other sponsored walkers by twenty laps on average.

One event, exclusively for high school students, was the Milky Way Mixer held on Feb. 2 at Brother’s Coffee.

After enjoying sundaes, karaoke and the Super Bowl game, the juniors and freshmen tied for first at the mixer and gained more points for their class.

Encouraging all Marlow Public Schools to support the cause, students on all campuses were able to wear a hat for $1 in support of M.O.R.O.T.O on Monday, Feb. 3.

At the high school, the junior class gained more points for the class competition as they wore the most hats.

Later that day, the Galactic Game Night was hosted in the main building of the high school and contained various games such as Mario Kart, Just Dance, Super Smash Bros, and much more.

As they had the most students in attendance, the sophomores and juniors tied for first place and gained the most points for that night.

On Tuesday, Feb. 4, MHS participated in a Space Jam dress-up day, where students wore jerseys or dressed up as aliens and played “Star Wars: The Coin Wars,” where students battled to raise the most coins for class participation points.

After everything was tallied, the freshmen came out on top for the dress-up day and the juniors won the coin war.

Although delayed due to weather, the volleyball tournament was held on Tuesday, February 12 and had 8 teams from throughout the community compete to win the title of volleyball champion.

In the end, the winner of the tournament was awarded $100 to be split among the team and, having the most students in attendance, the seniors won the most participation points from the event.

Also having rescheduled for the safety of customers, Rib Crib donated 10% of its profits when M.O.R.O.T.O was mentioned on Wednesday, Feb. 12.

At the Big Bang Assembly on Friday, Feb. 14, the art contest winners were announced along with the class chain-link winner and the class participation winner.

Winning the grand prize of half the art contest earnings, sophomore Karleena West placed first in the art contest followed by honorable mentions of sophomore Isabella Cobb, junior Jaiden Standridge and seniors Aurelia Holguin and Luke Davis.

The winners of the chain-link competition were the juniors followed by the sophomores, freshmen, and then the seniors in fourth place.

Moments before the announcement of the amount raised, it was announced that the junior class won the class participation contest and earned an extra fifteen minutes at lunch.

With this, the junior class M.O.R.O.T.O King and Queen nominees, Conor Hammond and Melissa Cooper were called to the floor to be crowned by last years’ royalty, seniors Malachi Eveland and Lindley Newberry.

To conclude a hard-earned week, MHS plans to go above and beyond by raising even more next year.
