Gaining exposure to job opportunities in the news field, on Wednesday, Jan. 22, the Marlow High School Journalism and Multimedia students traveled to Oklahoma City to tour News 9 and News 4.

With the goal of learning about the various careers that take place at the news stations, the students were introduced to the hard work that occurs in order for the broadcast to run seamlessly.

Guided by employees with years of experience, the students interacted with staff members working in various fields to gain insight on the multiple jobs that take place within the studios.

Meeting individuals such as SkyNews9 pilot Jim Gardner and News 9 anchor Lisa Monahan, the students became acquainted to personnel with notable reputations and years of hard work steering them through their careers.

Keeping her eyes open to the many opportunities being offered, senior and assistant editor of MHS exPRESS Kearsten Ball spoke about the impact the tours made on her and her plans for the future.

“It being my senior year, I am looking into majoring in journalism for college. Going into the tours, I was eager to see the different journalism career options that I could look more into,” said Ball. “At both news stations, I learned of the environment surrounding the day-to-day work of anchors and reporters. The tours gave me more insight of the journalism field, and I think it could be something for me.”

Through the tours, the students were given the opportunity to interact with various people, speaking to individuals such as producers, meteorologists and photographers.

Capturing the memories made throughout the tours, Multimedia students were able to learn about camera work and the many opportunities being offered in filmwork.

When asked how he could bring back what he learned from the tours and apply it in class, Multimedia student and senior Nash Farmer expressed his positive outlook on Multimedia’s future through the knowledge gained.

“I can use the information I learned from the trip by taking more time to put together scripts and backgrounds for video interviews,” stated Farmer. “We could work together more to get a common goal done.”

Becoming familiar with potential careers, Journalism and Multimedia plan on continuing to improve their abilities to prepare themselves for their futures, whether involved in news or not.
