This year, Thanksgiving weekend’s football tradition will meet with an Oklahoma tradition that has been carried on for 113 years: bedlam.
Bedlam, the name given to the Oklahoma Sooners vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys rivalry, is the most anticipated football game for Oklahomans.
When playing against each other, the OU Sooners lead the winning record of 88 wins for the sooners against the OSU Cowboys wins of 18 and 7 ties for the teams with the score, giving them a bragging advantage.
For Oklahomans, bragging rights and mutual bonds lie in the hands of the outcome of the game, and the same applies to Marlow High School students, such as senior and OU fan Nash Farmer.
“Bedlam in my family is just a big competition of smack talk,” Farmer described. “It gets chaotic, but it is usually all fun and games.”
Given that the game is around Thanksgiving day, it provides fans a chance to attend a football game or watch from home with friends and family.
Marlow High School sophomore Kristany Travis explained how her family’s Thanksgiving plans include the bedlam game.
“I plan to watch the bedlam game with friends and family after we have a cookout,” said Travis. “I get to support my cowboys while we watch the game, so I think it’s nice to have family there.”
With bragging rights going both ways, Travis explained the rivalry between her family.
“I look forward to the game because I get to trash talk to my dad and his friends because they are sooner fans,” said Travis.
After gathering around the table to eat turkey and stuffing on Thanksgiving, many Oklahoman families will come together on Saturday to watch the bedlam game.
