Channeling the motive to excel at academics can be difficult for high school students, but Senior Melinda Whiteman aspires to stay motivated and involved with her education.

Whiteman drives this motivation into her school subjects, such as history, math and science, which she described as her strong points.

“It’s fascinating to learn about our country’s history and the choices people made in the past that affected who and what we are now,” Whiteman said. in organized and logical patterns, and science is fun; learning to understand how things happen, such as growth, evolution, and how we came to be.”

When asked about advice for the underclassmen, Whiteman suggests following healthy study habits so students don’t fall behind in classes.

“Make sure to study your tests the night before, then sleep on the information you retained, and don’t procrastinate when it comes to getting your homework done,” Whiteman said.

Whiteman works hard inside and outside of school and maintains an up-lifting and fun-loving attitude for life.

Sophomore Rachel Retherford appreciates Whiteman’s dedication to being positive.

“She is very kind, sweet, and calm until you get to know her,” Retherford said. “Then she can be quite outgoing and silly.”

Whiteman’s hard-work and friendly personality are what motivate students to go above and beyond, such as senior Rebekah McPherson.

“Melinda has always pushed me to work hard and do well in school,” McPherson said. “If we’re being honest, Melinda and I kind of have a competition going on with our grades throughout high school, and that helps push both of us to do better.”

Whiteman also carries her passion to activities such as being a member of the youth group at the Chisholm Trail Church of Christ and the Marlow High School band, where she currently holds the 4th chair trumpet position.

Whiteman hopes to take this passion to college, with an undecided major at Oklahoma Christian University or the University of Central Oklahoma.
