Being a tradition for many generations, homecoming at Marlow High School has been filled with uncontainable spirit.
This year, MHS Homecoming week was Sept. 23-27, ending with the Homecoming game versus Douglass High School on Friday, Sept. 27.
Throughout homecoming week, students and faculty at MHS showed school spirit by dressing up for the daily themes designated by the high school cheerleaders.
The themes for the dress up days included: Monday, “Outlaws are Fancy;” Tuesday, “Outlaws are Earning Their way to Victory;” Wednesday, “Outlaws Sparkle;” Thursday, “Everybody Wants to be Like Me;” and Friday, “ Being an Outlaw Feels Like a Million Bucks.”
Students participated by wearing their favorite hats, wearing their favorite jerseys, going all-out in sparkles and bling, dressing as a famous personality and wearing blue and white to the football game.
Noting that the definition and expression of school spirit differs from person to person, junior Carson Moore defined school spirit and described how he shows his support for Marlow High School on and off the field.
“I know it’s kind of hard for the football players to dress up. The school has themes every Friday and we wear our jerseys since it is game day,” said Moore. “Showing school spirit is just taking pride in my school and always being excited about my school and about everything my school does.”
Another way MHS supported the Outlaw football team was through classroom door decorating.
Having to incorporate the week’s theme of “Being an Outlaw Feels Like a Million Bucks” into their classroom door, fourteen classes participated in the competition.
The winning door decorators and most spirited for the week were announced Thursday, Sept. 26.
First place door decorators was a tie between senior English IV teacher Haley Wilson and Special Education teacher Kim Davis, followed by a three way tie between Chemistry teacher Sherri Curry, Science teacher Rhonda Hennan and the office in second place, and Art teacher Arlyn Brantley in third place.
The spirit day winners included: Monday, sophomore AJ Brown and secretary Carla Samples; Tuesday, senior Seth Aguilera, sophomore Will Bergner and teacher Keith Kizarr; Wednesday, senior Macoy Ramsey and teacher Whitney Broussard; Thursday, senior Colbey Calloway and vice principal Jeremy Gage.
Carrying their spirit from this week to the homecoming game, students supported the Outlaws by cheering them on in the student section.
Defining school spirit, senior football manager Rebekah McPherson describes how spirit can boost the football team’s efforts.
“School spirit is the enthusiasm you bring to any school. I think when you get crazy, it’s good,” McPherson said. “I think the student section’s spirit during a game affects the team because if they’re excited, the team is excited and ready to go play.”
Junior Abby Strong expressed how she shows her school spirit throughout homecoming week and at the football game.
“I dress up with the themes,” said Strong. “Then I show up to the games, sit in the student section and support the sports teams. I do not talk negatively about them and have spirit.”
Explaining how the student section’s support affects how he plays, Moore feels that the positive energy encourages the team to continue to strive for their victory.
“I feel like the student section’s spirit flows onto our sideline and the sideline flows onto the field,” Moore said. “I feel like a football team can be real good by themselves, but with their full community backing them, they can be great.”
Preceding the football game, the homecoming coronation took place.
The ceremony included the entire football team, the football managers, Bootleggers, cheerleaders and the nominated court.
Among the court was seniors Gabie Gill escorted by Seth Aguilera; McPherson escorted by Sam Ivory; Cheyenne Pope escorted by Branson Seaton; Lindley Newberry escorted by Peyton Ladon; Billie Harrison escorted by Brian Foss; and Crowning Captain Tag Allen.
Newberry was announced Homecoming Queen following the court’s introductions.
Continuing the excitement through the night, the Outlaws beat the Douglass Trojans, 41-2.
Having been their first district game of the season, the team was particularly proud of the outcome.
Starting the district season with a win, the Outlaws will continue practicing to better themselves and are hopeful to qualify for playoffs.
The Marlow Outlaw football team will play at Pauls Valley on Friday, October 4 for their second district game.
