Senior gets state award
Carney is Academic All-Stater
Melissa Valencia MHS exPRESS writerFollowing in the footsteps of 2013 Marlow High School graduate, Jordan Van Buskirk, senior Tyler Carney has achieved the Academic All-State Award.
This is one of the various awards given by the Oklahoma Foundation of Excellence, but the Academic All-State Award is the most prestigious.
The honor of holding this title has only been possible since 1987.
Marlow guidance counselor Brenda Parker praised Carney on his achievement.
“Tyler has quietly succeeded at all levels academically, and he is receiving the rewards for his efforts,” Parker said.
Only 100 high school students are chosen for this honor out of 157 nominations from all over the state.
To be eligible to apply, students have to be nominated by either the principal or superintendent. High School Principal, Bryan Brantley, nominated Carney.
“We are very excited to have two Academic All-Staters in two years,” Principal Bryan Brantley said, “This opens other doors for these students at the university level for scholarships and other opportunities,” Brantley added.
Another requirement for this award is that students must score a 30 or above on the ACT test, achieved an SAT score of at least 1340 or be selected as a semi-finalist for a National Merit, National Achievement or National Hispanic scholarship.
They must also submit an essay, which is reviewed by the selection committee.
Carney attributes his success to his willingness to prepare for the ACT.
“I studied hard for the ACT, and it paid off,” Carney said
Each of the 100 high school seniors who receive this honor will also get a $1,000 scholarship and a medallion and be honored at the foundation’s 28th annual Academic Awards Banquet on Saturday, May 17, at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center in Norman.
Along with his parents, James and Rhonda Carney, Tyler will be accompanied by Brantley, Parker, and nominating teacher Sharon Bullard.
